Shaun Whitlock is a barrister specialising in construction and engineering.

Shaun was previously an Executive Director of a global firm providing legal services in the construction sector. Prior to that Shaun was a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and worked for 3 major civil and heavy engineering contractors. Shaun was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2005.

Shaun has huge practical experience of most aspects of civil and heavy engineering projects including roads and bridges motorway contracts including major structures and earthworks.

Shaun has acted for clients at all levels in the UK and international construction sector in the provision of contractual analysis, contract drafting, risk and dispute analysis, general contractual and commercial advice, claim preparation and defence and representation in adjudication, arbitration, litigation and DRB hearings. Shaun has provided such advice in relation to building contracts generally as well as engineering and rail projects.  

KEY STRENGTHS

Shaun’s ability to quickly understand and analyse situations leads him to provide efficient and effective legal advice. This, together with his in-depth knowledge of the technical nature of construction projects, means that he can quickly focus on the client’s needs and objectives. In many cases this has lead to an early resolution of disputes through negotiation or mediation. Where matters escalate to a dispute, Shaun is able to utilise his skills in the effective analysis of evidence and in effective drafting of pleadings and advocacy. Shaun also provides advice and representation in relation to employment law matters and has lectured extensively throughout the UK on construction and commercial matters.

Shaun has recently advised a joint venture building contractor towards reaching financial close on a major hospital PFI project and has also provided post FC support in the drafting of contracts and agreements, advice upon the interpretation of the building contract and upon specific matters arising which affects his client. In addition, Shaun has successfully advised and represented recent clients in adjudication proceedings concerning contractual entitlements and termination. Shaun continues to provide advice upon a wide range of matters including payment and performance disputes and claims concerning the interpretation of contracts.
