PROFILE

Nigel Cornwell is based in Dubai dealing with contractual issues, claims and dispute resolution. Nigel has over 25 years involvement with UK domestic and international construction and engineering projects, from contract negotiation and drafting to ad hoc advice, arbitration, litigation, adjudication and mediation.

Formerly a partner at niche firm Bristows in London, Nigel left to head up the litigation unit in the UK legal department of international contractor Skanska. Then, after 18 months at Corbett and Co International Construction Lawyers, where he worked on a $200m arbitration in Cairo, Nigel joined Systech Solicitors. Over the years, he has acted for employers, contractors and sub-contractors on projects and disputes all over the UK and in Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai. This experience has covered schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, mining, tunnels, offices and commercial developments, malls, manufacturing and process plant, factories and facilities.

On the non contentious side, Nigel has dealt with all the major standard forms of building and engineering contract, bonds, warranties and guarantees, MOUs and supplementary agreements. Dispute resolution experience includes a large number of High Court trials (in the TCC and Court of Appeal), domestic and overseas arbitration hearings, together with over 60 statutory UK adjudications and 15 mediations.

KEY STRENGTHS

Nigel's experience means he is well placed to see what problems and issues are major ones, where they are likely to lead and how they should best be tackled, He has developed a particular interest in alternative dispute resolution, particularly through mediation. He has also lectured widely and conducted seminars on topics of current interest and importance. Nigel has a working knowledge of German and French
